Apedale - 2019

Exploring the redevelopment of former industrial land in North Staffordshire.

Industrial since the 1770s, when the Apedale Canal ushered in large-scale iron working and coal mining, the site's mines closed in stages through the 20th century, with the last footrail shutting in the early 1990s. Staffordshire County Council then transformed it into a public country park, and volunteers have since opened a museum with guided tours into the surviving Apedale Colliery footrail.

The series frames Apedale as a restless landscape, moving from open fields to industrial desolation to leisure space, now facing renewed pressure from encroaching housing and warehousing. Combining new and archival images, the work visualises Britain's continually shifting physical and social landscape.
